Last weekend, while I was in Sydney with my friend, I decided that I would attempt a partial social media detox. I know that sounds naff but with one kid living in Europe and my family living in New Zealand, I like to keep the airwaves semi open at all times.
Anyhoo, I blocked myself from any game playing; restricted myself from reading and commenting on other people’s Facebook posts; read no blogs; only allowed myself to do Facebook check-in’s; blocked myself from Tumblr and Twitter and allowed myself to post a maximum of 10 photos on either Instagram or Facebook! Oh, I did read my emails but only twice a day.
See – it’s easy for you people who only have Facebook and/or Instagram to get all judgey and say …. just turn it off and forget about it!!! But when you are a complete social media whore like I am, turning it off and forgetting about it becomes a little more complicated! I actually wrote down my restrictions so that I wouldn’t forget my limitations and it was about this time, that I realised that San Diego Comic Con, and my personal favourite, The Nerd HQ would be streaming live panels all weekend! For those of you that don’t know about Comic Con, I am not even going to attempt to explain it but will put some links for those who are curious. And before anyone says it ….. No! I am NOT too old for this shit!
What on earth was I going to do? I totally adore Zach Levi and #ConversationsForACause and all that he does to fund raise for Operation Smile. I sat down each night (thank goodness that Australia is ahead time zone wise) and planned which panels I would listen to in bed, with my earbuds in, after it was lights out! I could do this because I am a night owl and my friend is not, so there was always a couple of hours after she was asleep that I needed to fill in ….. in the dark …. as we were sharing a room! Thankfully, You Tube and The Nerd HQ Facebook page had all of the panels recorded. Needless to say I have spent most of this week catching up on the ones I missed. Here is the trailer for the new Kong movie that was launched at Comic Con. It will be in theatres in March 2017.
Of course, there was always going to be 2 huge problems and they were the Comic Con 2016: Kong: Skull Island panel which I sacrificed and decided not to watch live and the Nerd HQ 2016: A Conversation with Tom Hiddleston which I totally had to watch/listen to live!
At 11 am Sydney time, I did the rudest thing I have ever done in my life. I walked around the Marrickville Markets with my friend, her son and his girlfriend, with my earbuds in and totally ignored them for 30 minutes, while I listened and laughed and enjoyed the live podcast. At first I was very apologetic but after about 10 minutes, I was totally sucked down the vortex which led to Tom and Zach! And I am not sorry!
So other than the hiccup that was Comic Con, how did I do with my detox? I did have one other slight problem when this happened to BerlinBoy and BossBoy and my favourite Unicorn football team! A popular football website, In Bed With Maradona, wrote an article about the kit they designed for their team and it kind of went out all over the world!! It began like this ….
Sometimes a kit comes along and all you can do is admire. Sometimes it’s a kit from a club you’ve never even heard of.
Today, that happened to me. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to the SFC Friedrichshain Internazionale home and away kit by Puma. The club won promotion to the Verbandsliga last year and will wear the kits for the 2016/17 season.
And you can read the full article here. I simply could not ignore this and so I did share this exciting news.
So, other than the hiccup that was Comic Con and the hiccup that was my Unicorns – how did I go with my detox? Pretty well, I think. When I checked my Facebook notifications after getting home – I had 250 unanswered notifications on one of my Facebook pages (I have 2 pages you see) plus “too many to count” notifications on my blog reading accounts. I didn’t even bother to check the numbers on Tumblr or Twitter and I had missed so many Instagram updates that I just moved on from where I was.
Did I feel better? Yes, in some ways. As I knew before I started, it really wasn’t long enough to make a lasting impact. But it did allow me to decide which of the platforms are most important to me and which are the biggest time wasters. I have already removed the Tumblr app from both my phone and my laptop. I have also removed all but 3 games and I have put a time limit on those.
I did enjoy seeing Sydney through my eyes rather than my camera but I still enjoyed taking photos of the scenery. I just made sure that after I had taken one or two, I put my phone back into my bag and enjoyed the show going on around me.
Does social media run your life or do you control it? Personally, I don’t think it is the Big Bad Wolf that some say, BUT you do have to be in charge of it and I don’t think that I am in control of it at all times. This is usually when I am feeling tired or lonely or just down. My detox weekend made me think of alternatives for these times because we do have a beautiful world out there to live in, not just observe or write about in 140 characters!
