Music From My Heart – Angel by Sarah McLachlan.

Music is a barometer for my mood!  I’m guessing that this is the same for many others.  I have playlists set up on my laptop for different times of the day and for different activities and for different moods.  Many times, since my return from Berlin, I have found myself dancing around my kitchen to upbeat tunes!  Although tired, I have been extremely contented to be home and very happy to have been able to visit with my son and meet his friends in Berlin.  This caused me to be upbeat and dancing!

Then came yesterday ….. my mood changed and with it my playlist!  While I was listening to a certain song I began to weep – and I wept and wept!  And I could not stop.  And I didn’t really know why.  After a good cry, I dusted myself off and got on with the rest of my day.  I didn’t think of it again – until the same song came on my car radio today.  Once again, the tears began to flow and they would not stop.  So I had to turn my car around and return home.

When I got home, I actually put the song on again, downloaded the lyrics and tried to work out exactly what this song was doing to me and why it was effecting me in such an emotional way.  The song is Angel, written and sung by  Canadian singer, Sarah McLachlan and released as a single in 1998.

This is what I came up with –

  • Sarah McLachlan’s voice is sublime.
  • The simplicity of the arrangement is a masterpiece.
  • The lyrics reveal to me my deepest, darkest, saddest insecurities.
  • I discovered that even when I’m happy and contented, my heart is never far from the sadness that has come from death and then the loneliness that follows.
  • When I am not getting enough sleep, I become super emotional.
  • And finally, I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.  The combination of the voice, the arrangement, the lyrics and my emotions makes it this for me.

I don’t usually print the lyrics for songs but I really want you to know them with this song. So here is Angel by Sarah McLachlan – firstly in print and then in via a YouTube clip.  Enjoy!

Sarah McLachlan – Angel Lyrics

Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance,
For a break that would make it okay. There’s always some reason
To feel not good enough,
And it’s hard, at the end of the day.

I need some distraction,
Oh, beautiful release.
Memories seep from my veins.

Let me be empty,
Oh, and weightless, and maybe
I’ll find some peace tonight.

In the arms of the angel,
Fly away from here,
From this dark, cold hotel room,
And the endlessness that you fear.
You are pulled from the wreckage,
Of your silent reverie.
You’re in the arms of the angel,
May you find some comfort here.

So tired of the straight line,
And everywhere you turn,
There’s vultures and thieves at your back.

The storm keeps on twisting.
Keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack.

It don’t make no difference,
Escape one last time.
It’s easier to believe in this sweet madness,
Oh, this glorious sadness,
That brings me to my knees.

In the arms of the angel,
Fly away from here,
From this dark, cold hotel room,
And the endlessness that you fear.
You are pulled from the wreckage,
Of your silent reverie.
You’re in the arms of the angel,
May you find some comfort here.

You’re in the arms of the angel,
May you find some comfort here.
